Diviners

by Jim Leonard
directed by Teresa Doggett

September 24–26 & October 1–3

This is the story of a young boy in the dusty 1930s who has a gift for divining water, but he holds a memory that makes him afraid of it. When an empathetic stranger instills courage and hope in the young lad, the authentic, yet entertaining characters of his community begin a journey towards understanding and healing with unexpected and tragic consequences.

Private Eyes

by Steven Dietz
directed by Janice Valdez

December 3–5 & 10–12

Bubbling with ideas about the power of suspicion and the difficulty of confronting truty, Private Eyes is a darkly comic combinatin of film noir and farce in which it’s not always clear what’s real and what isn’t and there’s more than one puzzle to be solved.

Electra

by Sophocles, translated by Frank McGuinness
directed by Steve Callahan

February 4–6 & 11–13

Electra made her first appearance over two thousand years ago. She was then what she is now — an astonishing modern. In love with her father and haunted by his sudden death, she is driven by a single, unassuageable desire — to avenge his assassination at the price of her mother’s life. Her story of abandonment touches the deepest chords of our own times. It is both a private trauma and an account of a nation at war with itself. Fueled by apocalyptic events, the play runs with the brief uninterrupted force of a feature film &$8212; in a compelling new version by Frank McGuinness, specially commisioned by London’s Donmar Warehouse theatre.

Art

by Yasmina Reza
directed by B. Weller

April 8–10 & 15–17

A man, Serge, buys a modern painting for a relatively large sum of money (200,000 French francs). It is basically a large canvas, about five foot by four, painted white, with “fine white diagonal scars.” One friend to whom he shows off his new purchase, Marc, is completely unsettled by Serge’s purchase. Another mutual friend, Yvan, is more ambivalent. Their debate explores not just the nature of art, but also of friendship and how we relate to both.
